Seven families celebrated the dedication of their new homes on Saturday in the Willow Cove subdivision in Chandler, at a ceremony held at 106 Willow Cove Court.
The homes were built through a partnership between Habitat for Humanity of Warrick County and the USDA Self-Help Housing program. The families are expected to move in before Thanksgiving.
Habitat of Warrick County usually builds six homes at a time. This project had seven, and Executive Director Amy Hobbs said the extra home added time — the build took 13 months. She said five more families are preparing to close on homes that will complete the subdivision.
New homeowner Cortney Havener said the house is the first her family has had on its own, and that her two girls are excited to paint and decorate their rooms. She said she learned new skills during the build and hopes to use them on future Habitat projects.
Havener said that as a single parent she had thought owning a home was out of reach in today's housing market, and credited the program with making it possible.
