Indiana will receive three federal safety grants totaling $46,268,800, the U.S. Department of Transportation has announced. The money comes through the Railroad Crossing Elimination and Safe Streets and Roads for All programs.
In New Haven, the city will get $1,068,000 for its Bridging Broadway project. The plan is to build a pedestrian bridge over active Norfolk Southern freight rail lines, giving people a safe way across when trains block nearby crossings.
The largest award, $35,300,800, goes to Crawfordsville for final design and construction to eliminate the at-grade Market Street railroad crossing, where stopped trains can block a major east-west route that includes U.S. Highway 136 and State Routes 47 and 32.
Noblesville will receive $9,900,000 for its Safer Greenfield Avenue project, covering the stretch between 10th and 16th streets with trails on both sides of the road, a roundabout at 16th Street and drainage work.
U.S. Sen. Jim Banks, who wrote in support of all three projects, said safer roads and railroad crossings protect Hoosier families and help communities move people and goods more reliably.
