Lockheed Martin has completed its $3.4 billion acquisition of Ultra Maritime, giving the global defense company its first facility in Indiana.

Ultra Maritime operates a manufacturing plant in Columbia City that produces sonobuoys, devices used to detect and identify objects moving in the water, particularly submarines. The facility was previously operated as ERAPSCO, a joint venture between Ultra Maritime and Sparton Corp. that was dissolved in 2023.

Mark Kenny, a Lockheed Martin senior vice president who previously held the same role at Ultra Maritime, told Inside INdiana Business at the Northeast Indiana Defense Summit in Fort Wayne that production of sonobuoys in Columbia City will stay the course, with a look at expanding into other markets, especially unmanned maritime work.

In addition to sonobuoys, Ultra Maritime produces sonar technologies, torpedo defense systems, radar, electronic warfare and autonomous maritime sensing platforms. The business is now part of Lockheed Martin's Rotary and Mission Systems unit.

Lockheed Martin did not specify whether any jobs would be negatively affected by the acquisition.
