The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society will expand its restoration and maintenance shop in New Haven after receiving more than $1.4 million from former society president Art Lindblom.
Railfan & Railroad Magazine reported Oct. 30 that the gift is the largest single donation in the society's history. The expanded complex will be named the Art Lindblom Locomotive Shop, in honor of Lindblom, who oversaw construction of the original shop.
The Edgerton Road shop opened in 1991 and has hosted major work including a rebuild of Nickel Plate Road Berkshire 765 and the restoration of Chesapeake & Ohio Kanawha 2716, along with work on more than six passenger cars. The addition will add capacity for more preservation projects and for annual and seasonal maintenance.
Crews will also get upgraded quarters, including a break room, a shower and the society's first indoor restrooms. The society has started a separate campaign seeking $20,000 to outfit the expanded space with tools and equipment.
Work on the expansion is expected through the end of 2026 and into early 2027. The society also operates excursions through the year as part of its Indiana Rail Experience along the Indiana Northeastern Railroad.
