At least seven people were wounded in a shooting on Kirkwood Avenue in downtown Bloomington at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, according to Bloomington police. No deaths were reported.
Officers from Bloomington police and Indiana University police were already near Kirkwood between Grant and Dunn streets monitoring a large crowd when they heard gunshots in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue, two blocks west of campus. Police said preliminary information indicates a disturbance in the crowd just before the shooting, which came on Halloween night about six hours after IU's homecoming football game ended.
Police said a man with a gun was seen running from the area and was caught east of Indiana Avenue near Dunn Meadow, with a gun found nearby. In an updated release, police confirmed an 18-year-old Indianapolis man booked on resisting law enforcement and unlawful carrying of a handgun was related to the shooting and had an AR-15 style handgun. Police said it was not yet known whether he fired the shots. Those charges are allegations.
The seven injured people — four men and three women ages 17 to 27 — were taken by ambulance to area hospitals and were in stable condition, police said. Six gave Indianapolis addresses and one gave a Greenwood address, some told police they had come to Bloomington to celebrate Halloween, and none are believed to be Indiana University students. One injured person had an AK-47 pistol that police confiscated.
Investigators found shell casings of different calibers near 420 Kirkwood Avenue and said more victims are possible. Anyone with information or video is asked to contact Detective Chris Scott at 812-339-4477.
