A Hammond resident is asking the city to pause any demolition of the former Clark High School building at 1921 Davis Avenue while a state-mandated disposition process for the property is still pending.

Lizette Montanez, who lives in Hammond's 1st District, raised the request during public comment before the Board of Public Works and Safety.

Montanez warned that tearing the building down before the state process finishes could expose the city to litigation. She also raised health concerns tied to a Superfund site near the property.

She argued the building could still serve an educational use and that demolition now would close off that option before the disposition process has run its course.

The board took the comments during its public session. No decision on the building's future was announced in the meeting coverage.
