Democrat Julie McGill has won the Indiana Senate District 15 race in Fort Wayne, defeating Republican incumbent Liz Brown in one of Tuesday's closest statehouse contests.

Final unofficial results gave McGill 51.7 percent of the vote, with 21,680 votes to Brown's 20,232. The district is entirely within Allen County.

Brown had served three terms in the seat and had narrowly won her party's nomination earlier this year over a primary challenger. She issued a statement Wednesday morning wishing McGill well as she takes over the district.

Speaking at Allen County Democratic Party headquarters on election night, McGill thanked voters for the chance and said she wants to focus on issues that affect daily life for Hoosiers, including affordability and health care.

The result was part of a strong night for Democrats across Allen County, where the party also won several other local races.
