The Allen County Election Board has addressed a concern raised during early voting on Tuesday, after a voter reported that a machine appeared to misrecord their ballot.

Director of Elections Amy Scrogham said the issue involved a paper jam in the state-mandated Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail, known as a VVPAT, at Christ's Community Church, one of the county's satellite voting locations.

Scrogham said the VVPAT is an auditing tool only and is not used to tally votes. The jam caused the paper trail to show a previous voter's selections, and mechanics fixed the problem quickly once they became aware of it.

She stressed that the voting panel itself recorded the voter's selections as intended.

The board says it will remind poll workers to check that the VVPAT window is clear before another voter uses a machine, and it is working with its vendor on ways to prevent future jams. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
