A disbarred Evansville attorney has been accused of collecting legal fees from a client and pretending to perform the work he was hired to do.

Jared Thomas, 41, of Evansville, was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail on Oct. 25. He is charged with forgery, fraud and practice of law by a nonlawyer. Those charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.

Police say a woman hired Thomas to expunge her criminal record. Investigators questioned him about allegedly taking $950 from the client and lying about filing the paperwork.

According to WFIE's coverage, Thomas claimed that a paralegal with access to his computers had been filing fake documents.

Thomas was arrested in 2021 on a check deception charge and sentenced to probation. The Indiana Supreme Court later found he had mismanaged a trust account, forged a judge's signature and falsified a document, and he was barred from practicing law in Indiana in 2022.
