The National Weather Service Northern Indiana office issued a freeze warning for portions of northern Indiana and northwest Ohio from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. EDT on Sunday, Oct. 18.

Forecasters expected sub-freezing temperatures as low as 31 degrees. The warning area included Allen, DeKalb, LaGrange, Steuben, Noble, Whitley, Kosciusko, Miami, Wabash, Huntington, Wells, Adams, Grant, Blackford and Jay counties in Indiana, among others.

The weather service said frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and could possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

Residents in the warned area were advised to take steps to protect tender plants from the cold.
