An Evansville tax preparer has been sentenced to federal prison after pleading guilty to five counts of assisting in the preparation of a fraudulent tax return.
Tonda Avery operated Diversity Tax Service on Weinbach Avenue in Evansville, according to court documents cited by WFIE.
Officials say Avery prepared more than 120 fraudulent tax returns in which she made up fake businesses and claimed tax credits for COVID-19 sick leave, resulting in nearly a million dollars in total tax loss.
Avery was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison. She was also ordered to pay more than a million dollars in restitution.
