The Allen County Coroner's Office on Monday, Oct. 19, identified the man who died after a police-action shooting in southeast Fort Wayne as Jaden I. Handley, 19, of Fort Wayne.
According to the coroner's office, the shooting happened on Monday, Oct. 12, in the 6800 block of Chadwick Drive. Three Rivers Ambulance Authority took Handley to a local hospital, where he died on Oct. 15. An autopsy found the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds, and the manner of death was listed as homicide — police action shooting. The coroner counted the death as Allen County's 26th homicide of 2026.
Fort Wayne police have said officers were responding to reports of a man in a mental health crisis behaving violently, and that Handley came toward officers holding a large chef's knife and was shot after refusing commands to drop it.
Police say an officer first used a Taser, which did not stop Handley, and that two officers then fired. Officers gave medical aid at the scene, and the two officers who fired were placed on five days of administrative leave under department protocol while the shooting is reviewed.
The incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Indiana State Police, the Allen County Sheriff's Department, the Allen County Prosecutor's Office and the coroner's office.
